The idea of varma.net is to create a network for our family with the
idea of using the internet Giving information on our families to the Internet
(and) There would be an internet site "www.varma.net" designed by a professional
web-designer (one of us). Explaining briefly the major families in Kerala
and providing links for our individual home pages wherever they are. Exchanging
information : The "varmas@varma.net" would provide an e-mail address to
send out a message to all.
It would be a great idea, if some-one back home in Kerala, takes up the
challenge of giving family news to all through this medium - say once
a week. Also others can give the news of interest to the family from their
own perspective. This will be a way to get news to the far-flung areas
of the world. Your ideas are welcome. Please send it to varmas@varma.net
This is a non-commercial site. Please do not advertise products through
varmas@varma.net No space will be provided for individual home pages.
These can be created on Free - e-mail providers like Tripod.com etc. However
we will allow and are interested in links to home pages of the varmas.
We will have a page with all the names of subscribers with a brief description.
There is no subscription fee. I am bearing all the costs as of now.

How varmas@varma.net operates: We have hired some space with a service
provider (www.webcom.com). We have got "varma.net" allocated from the
internic. When we send mails to varmas@varma.net, we have programmed the
site to forward the e-mail to all the addresses stored in a file. We have
to update this file to include or delete names from the file. Jayan, myself
and Asha can do the changes. You may reccomend the names of varmas using
a form provided for the purpose. These are our initial ideas. As more
and more suggestions come in, we are open and will incorporate them into
our site. Hence the above objective is only the begining. We have a long
way to go. More than anything, I want some enthusiasm and someone to take
up the responsibility of giving News.
regards,
Amaran .

The network has become very popular. Many members have joined. The time has come to enhance
it to suit the needs. It has become a very unique family network. There are now about 300+
members. The administration has become very difficult. It is necessary to automate most
of the activities. Also with the growth of the tools available, it is much easier to provide the
facilities. What we must provide on the re-designed site are: @varma.net accounts, a place to
put your photographs, automatic deleting and editing of contributions. We hope with these
efforts more members will join us. Our wish list of a family tree still stands. We want to
make it a co-development site on the lines of Open-Software. Let us see what we can do!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I had started a software company (Inapp) based out of Trivandrum and Palo-Alto with a few partners.
Jayan has joined me. We have a server at San Jose (Somewhere in the western frontier of technology).
As it is our own server, it is easy for us to host it there. Finally we are moving out of
webcom.com to our own server! For the technically savy: Apache Server, mod-perl, postfix mail
server, own list-server, DELL Poweredge 2400, 256MB, 20GB shared with about 40 other sites.
